I don’t usually write about charity events, even when wine is involved, but when I do, it’s because I’m more than excited about attending and pairing wine and food for a good cause. On Saturday, February 1, three wine writing friends (Allison Levine, Melanie Ofenloch, Michelle Williams) and I will sip, savor and support the Mendocino Coast Clinics (MCC) at their 21st annual fundraiser, Crab, Wine & Beer Days 2020, to be held on Friday, January 31 and Saturday, February 1 in Fort Bragg, California. You’re invited, too!

On January 31, guests may attend the Cioppino Dinner (with an optional beer tasting) at 4pm, 6pm or 8pm at Historic Pentecost Hall, 822 Stewart Street, Fort Bragg. On Saturday, February 1, the Crab Cake Cook-Off & Wine Tasting Competition will be held from noon to 3pm at the big white tent at the corner of Main & Spruce, Fort Bragg. With a stellar lineup of wineries and breweries (click here for the participants), Crab, Wine & Beer Days 2020 promises to be a resounding success.  “Mendocino Coast Clinics is the only not-for-profit health center on the north coast of Mendocino County from Westport to Elk and inland to Comptche, serving nearly 10,000 patients annually. Outreach includes medical, dental, behavioral, pediatrics, OB/GYN services & Street Medicine. We accept private insurance, Medi-Cal, Medicare, sliding scale – and all, regardless of the ability to pay. All.

As a proven, stable provider of health care in our area, Mendocino Coast Clinic boldly identifies, embraces and responds to the myriad of needs in our diverse population. The funds raised during our 2020 campaign will be dedicated to our new, vital outreach, Open Door @MCC. Led by Barbara Kilian, MD, this service will address the needs of the youth and young adults in our local LGBTQ community.” Tawny MacMillan, Event Coordinator, Crab Claw Sponsor

Serving nearly 10,000 patients each year, MCC is by all accounts a trusted, established medical center and the awareness is high. In July 2019, MCC received the Large Business of the Year award from the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce. With 125 employees, MCC is one of the major employers on the North Coast and produces services in four Fort Bragg locations. It was recognized with proclamations from the offices of Congressman Jared Huffman, Senator Mike McGuire, Assemblyman Jim Wood and the City of Fort Bragg.

A most welcome surprise was the anonymous donation of $60,000 to support their mission to always offer access to anyone needed health care. This generous gift, originally part of an estate plan, was offered in 2019 so that the donor could witness MCC “putting the money to good use.”

Everyone is encouraged to attend the Crab, Wine & Beer Days 2020, donate (click here), sponsor or consider a monthly gift. We hope that the $60,000 can be matched and continued care can be offered for coastal residents. Allison, Melanie, Michelle and I hope to see you there, too, as we sip, savor and support the good works of the Mendocino Coast Clinic.

Cheers! ~ Cindy
