It’s never too early to begin thinking about which wines to open on the weekend and, as you can imagine, I have plenty of choices! And you do, too! There are several factors that play into my selection.  Will this be a weekend of chores, simply relaxing with a good book, or a little bit of both? Will I be entertaining guests or going out to dinner with friends and a favorite bottle in tow?  Am I planning a romantic, candlelit evening with my special someone? Which wine will I sip while I’m getting dressed for a party?  How much do I really want to spend on a bottle of wine? Obviously, finding a wine that checks off all of the boxes can be a daunting task!

This weekend, choosing wine will be the easiest thing on your to-do list. I recently tasted the Poema White Wine 2014 and Poema Red Wine 2014, both sent to me as samples. Each will be fun to drink and wallet friendly!

Poema (the word for “poem” in Spanish) is a small-production Spanish wine producer that prides itself on crafting top value, quality wines including Cava and red and white blends.  Grapes for the wines I tasted were sourced in the Catalunya region, one that I visited several years ago.  Located north and west of Barcelona, dry, hot summers and mild winters near the coast and hot summers and cold winters further inland are elements of the Mediterranean climate. The high mountain climate in the Pyranees to the north, is characterized by cold, snowy winters and hot summers with plenty of rainfall. Thanks to the region’s diverse climate and terroir, the blend in both of these wines were fruit forward and simply delicious.

Wines from Poema

Macabeo and Muscat grapes comprise the refreshing Poema White Wine 2013. Aromas of white flowers and soft citrus led to a lovely balance, smooth mouthfeel, gentle acidity, and bright fruit on the palate.  No oak was used on this approachable wine, a delight to open and pair with light appetizers or a few scoops of sorbet after dinner. Cost is a mere $12.

You’ll enjoy the fresh aromas of spice and red fruit on the nose and more spice and fruit, as well as earth on the palate of the Poema Red Wine 2013. Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were grown at the higher elevations in Catalunya. All were hand harvested, de-stemmed, and barely crushed before fermentation for ten days in stainless steel tanks. Balanced with integrated tannins and bright acidity, this wine is a bargain for $12. Consider a tapas crawl this weekend!
