It’s no secret that I’m enamored with the wines from Paso Robles AVA. I’ve written about my experiences there a few times and have tasted many exemplary selections from large and boutique producers. Located a few miles east of the Pacific Ocean midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this area with its vast array of unique microclimates is the New World home to Rhone varietals including Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Roussanne, and more.  (Winemakers are also doing an incredible job with the likes of Tempranillo and Barbera but that will have to be another blog post…)  I’ve visited Paso Robles four times and can’t wait to return.  When I do, I plan to stop by Hearthstone Estate; if the other wines in their portfolio are as delicious as those sent to me as samples, then I will be even happier than now.

Earlier in the week I wrote about the Hearthstone 2010 Lodestone (sample), a luscious Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre blend, that I paired with their recipe for Mediterranean Herb Roasted Chicken. I also received as samples a beautiful Roussanne and a rich Claret, both wonderful to sip with or without food!

The Hearthstone 2013 Roussanne (sample) is from 100% Estate grown Roussanne grapes.  Harvest began early in 2013 thanks in part to almost perfect growing conditions.  Due to a lack of rain, yields were lower than usual and the warm spring and summer with consistent temperatures produced fruit with outstanding flavor and concentration.

Served chilled, crisp stone fruit, floral, and bright citrus aromas were intense in the glass.  On the palate, notes of herbs such as rosemary and cloves, flowers, ripe pear, and minerality caused me to just sit back and say, “Ahhhhh”.  The 2013 Roussanne was a delightful pairing with my dinner of pan seared mahi mahi with basil cream sauce, sautéed spinach, and Yukon gold mashed potatoes with white wine sauce.  Are you ready to open a bottle yet? Cost is $28.

Claret is another name for dark, red Bordeaux wines from France or of similar character produced elsewhere.  The Hearthstone 2010 Fireside Claret (sample) is of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Merlot.  The 2010 growing season presented plenty of rain and two nights of hard frost in April lowered the yields of varietals that traditionally show an early bud break. Harvest began almost a month later than usual because of a cool summer, but during harvest, warmth and sun reigned.  Low yields and a long hang time helped the fruit to achieve a memorable richness and balance.

I loved this wine.  Tantalizing aromas of red, juicy cherries, mocha, vanilla, and that of an old tannery (really!) wafted from my glass.  Tastes of dark fruit, chocolate, and spice with smooth tannins and bright acidity created a balanced profile.  The 2010 Fireside Claret offered a lingering finish that begged you to reflect upon each sip.  Aged for thirty months in French oak, this lovely example of a Paso Robles Bordeaux is $38.

If you have never been to Paso Robles, add this special place to your wine country getaway list!  And don’t forget to stop by Hearthstone Estate…you just may see me there!

Cheers! ~ Cindy
