016The weekend is upon us and you may have your favorite, expensive bottle ready to open.  But there is more than enough space on the wine bar to open a few bottles of wine under or around $20.  Each week I suggest wines which are around that affordable price range and which will pair well with a Friday night dinner at home, with friends who drop by unexpectedly, a Sunday supper, or with a good book waiting for you on the back porch!

This past week, I spent a few days at my friend’s lake house which is around 100 years old.  On one marginal weather day, we decided to engage in some cosmetic makeovers in the rooms on the main level.  After we moved furniture, went to the store to refresh pillows and lamps, pulled a selection of paint chips for repainting the fireplace, ordered new carpeting for the sun porch and congratulated ourselves on our brilliance, we opened the wine.  Of course!

I brought two bottles of whites which were sent to me as samples.  Both were delicious and paired beautifully with relaxing on the deck overlooking the lake while we plotted our new home makeover series!  I hope you enjoy these wines as much as we did.

*Brancott Estates Flight Song Pinot Grigio 2013 – Light and refreshing, the Flight Song line is meant to be 20% lighter in calories than the Brancott Estate Pinot Grigio.  A blend of Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris, I enjoyed the intense aromas of melons, sweet, ripe fruit, and kiwis.  On the palate, this balanced wine with plenty of acidity had flavors of red apples and more juicy fruits along with a full mouthfeel.  Gaze at the lake at sunset, enjoy a good conversation,  and pour yourself a glass or two of this Pinot Grigio!  Cost is $13.

*Concha Y Toro Cassillero Del Diablo Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2013 – I have always been a fan of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc and Concha y Toro wines never disappoint.  Lovely pale straw with streaks of green in the glass, the aromas of fresh peaches and citrus were delightful.  The zesty acidity and subtle fruit tastes of grapefruit, stone fruits, and melon were clean and buoyant.  Put your feet up, open a good magazine on the pier, and sip this delicious wine.  Cost is around $10.
